Parish Nurse
A parish nurse is an experienced registered nurse with advanced education in parish nursing who serves as a member of the ministry staff of a faith community to promote health as wholeness of the faith community, consistent with the church’s mission.
The focus of this ministry is on health promotion, wellness, and spiritual well-being, encompassing:
- Health Counselor: Listens and responds to health concerns.
- Educator: Educates members about relationship between lifestyle, attitude, faith, and well-being.
- Advocate: Assists members who need support with decision-making regarding health care issues.
- Liaison: Refers members and helps access appropriate resources in the community.
- Trainer: Supervises volunteers in health ministers and provides education to support their role.
- Healer: Facilitates a whole-person approach to the healing of the mind, body, and spirit through sharing of presence, knowledge and prayer.
What services are offered?
- Visiting hospitalized and shut-ins.
- Health education and counseling.
- Monthly blood pressure clinics.
- Monthly Health Corner article in the TOWER.
- Sponsor bi-annual blood drives.
- Clinical assessments upon request.
A parish nurse is NOT:
- A physician
- Home-health nurse
- Therapist
- Clergyperson
