Parish Nurse

A parish nurse is an experienced registered nurse with advanced education in parish nursing who serves as a member of the ministry staff of a faith community to promote health as wholeness of the faith community, consistent with the church’s mission.

The focus of this ministry is on health promotion, wellness, and spiritual well-being, encompassing:

  • Health Counselor: Listens and responds to health concerns.
  • Educator: Educates members about relationship between lifestyle, attitude, faith, and well-being.
  • Advocate:  Assists members who need support with decision-making regarding health care issues.
  • Liaison:  Refers members and helps access appropriate resources in the community.
  • Trainer:  Supervises volunteers in health ministers and provides education to support their role.
  • Healer:  Facilitates a whole-person approach to the healing of the mind, body, and spirit through sharing of presence, knowledge and prayer.

What services are offered?

  • Visiting hospitalized and shut-ins.
  • Health education and counseling.
  • Monthly blood pressure clinics.
  • Monthly Health Corner article in the TOWER.
  • Sponsor bi-annual blood drives.
  • Clinical assessments upon request.

A parish nurse is NOT:

  • A physician
  • Home-health nurse
  • Therapist
  • Clergyperson
